Our Community Reads

website

overview

At Our Community Reads, a nonprofit founded in 2020, they’re all about creating safe spaces where Black children are celebrated, empowered, and inspired to explore new possibilities. But they also bring joy and connection to adults through shared experiences that foster curiosity and community.

They host fun, welcoming events for adults of all backgrounds, like Books and Brews. In collaboration with Black Men Read’s Tamara Tucker-Ibarisha, this event invites grown-ups to take a break from adulting and relive the magic of children’s storybooks! Held at local breweries, participants can read a classic or new favorite in an open mic format while enjoying nostalgic games like Play-Doh and Legos. There’s a suggested donation of $10 per person, and all proceeds support Our Community Reads and Black Men Read, helping us continue making a difference in our communities.

For those who prefer a quieter setting, they also host Silent Book Clubs, free for adults 18 and up. These relaxed gatherings are held in different locations, where people bring their favorite book, enjoy a bit of socializing, and then dive into some peaceful reading time. It’s a cozy, judgment-free zone where you can unwind and connect with fellow book lovers.

Whether you're joining for a storytime twist or a quiet escape with your favorite book, they welcome you to experience the joy of community and reading.
