The New Superior Branch at 1900 Harris Road

Due to road construction on Harris, please enter from MacArthur. We’ll have parking available for the ribbon cutting on the corner of MacArthur and Harris. Please allow yourself a few extra minutes to walk.

Who:

Our community! Everyone is welcome to celebrate the opening of the new library. Get free swag at any of the events and a free book at storytimes.

Opening Week at a Glance

In addition to our scheduled events each day (see below), you can drop in to check out the collection and participate in these great activities:

 

  • Go on a tour of the new branch. Tours will be held at 12 and 4 pm Tuesday-Friday.
  • Get creative with drop-in crafts and hands-on activities in the youth department
  • Take advantage of our informational tables in the lobby throughout the week.
Monday
Monday, November 14:

4pm- Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Celebrate the opening of YDL’s new Superior branch. Hear from officials involved in the project, watch the ribbon cutting, and tour the library. Don’t miss out on library-related giveaways and refreshments!

Wednesday
Wednesday, November 16

10:30am- Read, Sing, Play (Walkers-3 Years): Learn colors, shapes, and numbers through music and movement. We’ll read a book and sing lots of songs, then parents can stay and chat while kids play nearby. All attendees will receive a free book, thanks to the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor.

2pm- Senior Fitness with Jerry Powell: Lace up your shoes and grab a water bottle for a mid-day workout with fitness instructor Jerry Powell. This program is designed for patrons ages 55 & up, but is open to all adults who would enjoy a gentler workout.

7pm- Teen Anime Party: Teens can learn manga-style drawing with local artist Kam Reynolds. Make your own buttons, try tasty Japanese snacks, and watch anime.

Friday
Friday, November 18

11am- Jump Start your Job Search: The Washtenaw Community College Center for Career Success will present tips and tricks for finding your next job. Learn strategies that will help you get your resume to the top of the list. They will also discuss apprenticeship as a great pathway to a high demand, high wage employment opportunity. Learn about what an apprenticeship is and how you can take advantage of joining a company’s apprenticeship program.

3-6pm- Yappy Hour! Join us for these three pawsome events:

3pm- Read to Hugo, the Therapy Dog (Ages 5-12): Reading to a Therapaws dog helps children develop confidence and become better readers. Young readers can read to Hugo for a 15 minute slot in a quiet space.

4pm- Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office K9 Presentation: Deputy K9 handler Greg Roberts will share information about police K9’s and the WCSO K9 program, followed by a quick demonstration.

5pm- K9 Positive Techniques: Join Elly Price, a professional dog trainer, and her retired search & rescue dog. They’ll demonstrate dog obedience do’s & don’ts, nosework, and show tricks and games to play with dogs.

Tuesday
Tuesday, November 15

10:30am- Baby Time: Hear a book and learn fun songs during a short lap-sit storytime designed for pre-walkers. Then, stay to chat with other parents and caregivers while your little one plays. All attendees will receive a free book, thanks to the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor.

2pm- Chromebook-Basics: Explore the basic features of the Chromebook with hands-on practice. Basic keyboard and mouse/touchpad skills are required. Chromebooks will be provided for the class. Register here.

5pm- Imaginative Insects: Six eyes? Nineteen legs? Colorful, glowy, and shiny? Sure! We’ll use recycled paper materials to invent fantastic insects of all sizes. Local artist Linette Lao will help you make a creature of your own design for you to take home.

7pm- Play on the Ground Catapult: YDL needs your creative voice and vision! We are embarking on a crowdsourced ground mural project that invites play and interaction on the patio outside the youth area. Artist Yen Azzaro will guide participants through the process to develop a unique ground mural for the new library. This activity is generously supported by Kiwanis of Ann Arbor and Michigan Arts & Culture Council.

Thursday
Thursday, November 17

10:30am- Discovery Time (Ages 2-4): Learn a variety of preschool readiness skills– from ABCs to kindness– at this fast-paced storytime. We’ll pair music, movement, finger-plays, and books with exploratory learning and play. All attendees will receive a free book, thanks to the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor.

2pm- Library Digital Resources: We’ll review the digital resources available at the Ypsilanti District Library. Using the library’s website, you’ll learn how to request library and inter-library loan items, access research databases, and much more. We’ll also review the digital streaming services available, including e-books, movies, and magazines.

7pm- Family Engineering Night with UniteSTEM: Interested in learning about circuits? Want to control a robot, or fly a drone? Come join uniteSTEM for some exciting STEM-filled fun, and take home a free activity kit!

Saturday
Saturday, November 19

10:30am- Black Men Read Storytime: Black Men Read changes lives and learning by exposing kids to powerful stories and role models. Join members of BMR for a book reading featuring stories from the African diaspora and a hands-on art activity.

12pm- Reptiles! Cold Blooded Classification: Attention, aspiring herpetologists! Join the Leslie Science & Nature Center as they bring live reptiles and amphibians to the library. See reptiles and amphibians up close while learning about the adaptations, behavior, and physical structures of these incredible cold-blooded animals.

2pm- Black & Brown Theatre: Rapunzel: The Black and Brown Theatre will present a timeless story with a timely twist as two heroes go on an adventure to discover who they truly are. Bring the whole family for a live performance of the classic story of Rapunzel told entirely in rhyming-verse couplets and celebrate finally being able to “break free”.

3pm- How Does Your Garden Grow?: Join The Farm at Trinity Health for an exploration of plants, food and soil! Check out a scale model of living soil, plant your own pocket garden and play a seed-matching game.

4pm- Family Zumba with Jerry Powell: Lace up your shoes for a fun family dance workout for all ages. No experience is required.
