The Michigan Firehouse Museum is the perfect place for children and adults to indulge their inner firefighter. Housed in an original 1898 Romanesque Revival style firehouse, the museum is complete with horse-drawn vehicles, a restored bunk area, and a collection of firefighting gear that gives visitors a glimpse of life in a firehouse circa 1900. In addition, there are several displays to promote fire safety and prevention.

Witness the evolution of firefighting in an expansive 12 thousand square foot showcase, with a vast collection of hand, horse, and engine-propelled fire apparatuses. Inquisitive minds from any generation will be delighted with extinguishers, bells, helmets, ladders, breathing equipment, hose reels, nozzles, and even toy fire trucks.

Walking through the restored firehouse, visitors can view a fire engine steamer replete with horses, ready to go on their way to a fire. The large, modern addition offers 25 changing exhibits of antique fire trucks and early fire rigs, multiple displays of historic artifacts including tools, equipment, memorabilia and the largest collection of fire truck bells in the country.

Recently, a “new” rig was added to the collection; a 1917 American LaFrance Type 31 tractor with an aerial ladder. Of the 304 Type 31 tractors produced, 168 were equipped with aerial ladders, but only one had a 55’ ladder. That rig now sits in the main exhibit area of the Museum.

The Museum is located in Ypsilanti’s historic Depot Town, just east of the city of Ann Arbor and a few blocks north of Interstate 94 Exit 183. Other historic venues, restaurants and first class hotel accommodations are nearby.  The Michigan Firehouse Museum accommodates group tours upon request and is also perfect for small family outings. With affordable entry rates and endless opportunities to explore the historic life of a firefighter.
