When Visit Ypsi asked me to film a video about our museums in Ypsilanti, I didn’t know where to begin. Our town has such a rich history, so there is a lot to cover! After thinking over some strategies, I figured the best option would be to learn from an expert. So I sent out the MannSignal to our town historian, Mr. James Mann. I figured he could help to guide me through the different museums in our city.
Boy, was I right! Mr. Mann was extremely helpful in capturing the essence of our museums. When we attended the Yankee Air Museum, he shared interesting stories from the time, and also complained that while this museum was home to the real Rosie the Riveter, the woman in the famous Norman Rockwell painting was not her.
Hanging around town with Mr. Mann was a great time, and I want to thank him for his eagerness to share his historical knowledge with me and this town. This video is the first of four in a series of videos about our wonderful museums in Ypsilanti.
For more Ypsilanti History, look out for James’ new book: Ypsilanti: Modern Images of America, which is now available from Arcadia Publishing for $22.99. This is a picture history of Ypsilanti from the 1960’s to the present.
