First Fridays Ypsilanti (FFY) is a monthly self-guided art walk and Ypsilanti community event that celebrates the vibrant art culture of the area. Venues span an array of local gathering places like art galleries, restaurants, bars, studios, coffee shops, the library, and even the farmer’s market. Although usually held on the First Friday of every month, Independence Day has pushed this month’s installment back to the second Friday, July 10. Last month, special events included theatre, spoken word, and the Mark Maynard Six Pack Portrait Project gallery show. A collaboration between Mark Maynard’s AM 1700 radio show and local photographer Chris Stranad, the show featured portraits of the on-air guests, including Bee Roll, Paul Saginaw, Maria Cotera, Kayj Michelle, D’Real Graham, Brandon ‘Mc Kadence’ Mitchell, and more.
This month the number of venues with free live music has increased, with shows including Laith-Al Saadi at the Ypsilanti District Library, Miguel Zuniga and Little Island Lake at Beezy’s Cafe, and Violin Monster serenading patrons outside Sidetrack. Also, since this month’s events coincide with the Michigan ElvisFest, keep an eye out for art inspired by The King on sidewalks around town.
Check the FFY map for the full listing of events and see you on Friday!
